Methadone is a long-acting opioid medication that is used to eliminate cravings and painful withdrawal symptoms caused by heroin or prescription pill addiction.
When individuals go through the detoxification process but cannot feel normal, methadone or buprenorphine can help normalize your body’s neurological and hormonal functions that have been impaired by the use of heroin or prescription pills. Individual lengths of stay vary depending on duration and severity of addiction. Individuals who are good candidates for abstinence may titrate down from their stable dose at a rate that does not cause withdrawal or cravings, leading to a successful medically supervised withdrawal and abstinence from support medication. The main difference between these two medications is that methadone is a full agonist and buprenorphine is a partial agonist. Another important factor is the flexibility offered with buprenorphine treatment, as the federal regulations for take home medication is not as strict as with methadone. Talking with our physician will help you decide which medication is best for you.
